Our October part of the month is a 3D printed business card holder. I selected this part because, it’s a great functional, end-use part that’s also customized with my name and our Rize logo 3D printed directly onto the strong thermoplastic part. Rize’s patented Augmented Polymer Deposition (APD) 3D printing process makes this possible because the 3D printer extrudes isotropic engineering- and medical-grade thermoplastic while jetting functional inks voxel (3D pixel) by voxel through an industrial print head. In this case, the ink is Marketing Ink that was jetted anywhere and anytime the file specified.
What’s also unique to the Rize APD process is how fast and easily I removed the support from the part. This is because another functional ink, Release One, was jetted between the support and the part. Release One provides only just enough bond to avoid slippage, yet enables quick and easy release. Check it out. It literally took six seconds, at my desk. No chemicals or mess.
And, the Rize logo is also printed on the bottom of the business card holder. This is pretty remarkable and demonstrates how smooth and ‘finished’ the part is after releasing the support, without any sanding, filing or other post-processing.
I plan to use this card holder for years to come and since it’s watertight straight out of the printer, I don’t need to worry about knocking my coffee all over it (something I do with alarming regularity).
